Southern Miss Softball Opens Friday Afternoon in Baton Rouge

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team opens the 2018 regular season Friday afternoon, taking on UMass at 2:30 p.m. in the annual Tiger Classic before playing the host team LSU at 7:30 p.m. All games will be played at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge.

The Golden Eagles, under fourth-year head coach Wendy Hogue, return 10 letterwinners including seniors Samantha Reynolds, who finished the season second in batting average with a .320 batting average, and right-handed pitcher Samantha Robles who notched a 2.44 ERA.

In 2017, the Black and Gold finished with a 27-26 overall record, marking the first back-to-back winning seasons since the 2000 and 2001 seasons. The squad finished eighth in C-USA last year and are picked to finish ninth but with many newcomers looking to make instant impact.

The matchup between the Golden Eagles and Tigers will be streamed online through SEC Network+ and WatchESPN with Lyn Rollins and Yvette Girouard.

After this tournament the Golden Eagles host Alcorn State in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday February 13 at the Softball Complex. The game will be streamed on CUSA.tv and can be heard on 1400AM The Score.

Scouting the Opponents

UMass
UMass The Minutewomen, led by Kristi Stefanoni, finished the 2017 season as both the regular season and conference tournament runner-up with a 29-24 record. UMass, picked to finished second in the Atlantic 10, returns three 2017 all-conference selections to the 2018 squad.

LSU
LSU ended the 2017 season 48-22 and qualified for the Women’s College World Series for the third consecutive season. The Tigers return 13 letterwinners along with two All-American pitchers, Allie Walljasper and Carley Hoover.

UT Arlington
UT Arlington wrapped up the 2017 season at the National Invitational Softball Championships and finished with a 32-28 overall record. The Mavericks return Krista Rude who led the team in batting average (.359) and Sandra Mendoza who holds a .368 career batting average.

Syracuse
The Orange finished off the 2017 season with a 31-19, 10-10 record and are picked to finish sixth in the ACC softball preseason poll. They return five starters from last year’s lineup along with two starting pitchers behind head coach Mike Bosch.
