Softball Falls in Quarterfinals of C-USA Championships
DENTON, Texas - The Southern Miss softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to UAB on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Conference USA Championships at Lovelace Stadium on the campus of North Texas.
The Golden Eagles will now play Louisiana Tech in an elimination game at noon. Live stats, live audio, live video, and in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available throughout the game.
In the circle, Samantha Robles and Danielle Block combined for the complete game. Robles was charged with the loss. The sophomore allowed two runs on five hits with a walk in 3.0 innings. Robles gave way to Block who allowed a run on two hits in 3.0 innings of work.
The Black and Gold surrendered just three runs on the day, but were unable to generate enough offense to earn the win. Southern Miss recorded a pair of hits on the day and stranded seven runners on base. Sarah Evans led the way with a triple, while Robles singled. Lauren Holifield and Michelle Stringer each reached twice with a pair of walks, while Selena Estrada also drew a free pass.
The Golden Eagles used stellar defense to keep the game close. Southern Miss did not commit an error in the contest. Kaelyn Christofferson robbed a base hit with a diving stab and backhand over to Tori Dew at first base to help keep the Blazers off of the scoreboard in an inning. Christofferson finished with a team-high five putouts while adding an assist.
UAB scored a run in the first inning to take the lead. With one out, the Blazers' Caitlin Attfield doubled to left field. Back-to-back singles by UAB allowed Attfield to score and gave the designated home team a 1-0 advantage.
Southern Miss looked to answer in the top of the third inning. The Golden Eagles used a one-out walk by Stringer and a two-out intentional walk to Holifield to place a pair of runners on base. However, a fly ball ended the inning without the tying run scoring.
The Blazers added a run in the third inning. With two outs, UAB used a walk and a double to increase its advantage to 2-0.
The Golden Eagles threatened to chip into the lead in the fourth inning. With one out, Evans tripled to right center field. The triple was Evans' eighth of her career, tying her for second all-time in school history. Southern Miss was unable to plate Evans as a strikeout and a fly ball ended the inning.
In the fifth, Stringer drew a one-out walk to place a runner on base. Arielle Pollock entered to run. Estrada stepped in the batter's box to pinch hit. The junior smacked a ball down the left field line over the fence that looked to have tied the game at two, but the ball was ruled foul. Estrada finished the at bat with a walk. The two runners were left on base as a foul out to the catcher and a ground out ended the inning.
The final run of the game came in the sixth inning. With two outs, Rachel Dunsford hit a solo home run to left field.
In the seventh, the Golden Eagles threatened once again. Morgan McKeever reached base on a fielding error by the Blazers. With two outs, Robles singled to right field to give the Black and Gold runners on the corners. UAB induced a pop up in foul territory to the catcher that ended the game.
