Box Score

HOUSTON - Houston hit three homeruns and racked up 13 hits to earn a 7-1 victory over Southern Miss on Sunday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.

The Cougars (33-21, 15-9 C-USA) opened up the game with a pair of singles, but the Golden Eagles (13-33, 4-19 C-USA) were able to catch leadoff batter Holly Anderson trying to get greedy on the bases and caught her at second. Following her own single, Ashleigh Jones attempted to swipe second but was thrown out for just the second time this season by catcher Mackenzie Sher.

In the second, the Cougars recorded a pair of seeing-eye singles and a bunt single to load the bases and a sacrifice fly from Diedre Outon brought across the game's first run. Following a fly-out, Jennifer Hooker's two-out double to left center cleared the bases to give Houston a 3-0 advantage.

The Cougars found their swing in the fourth with three solo home runs, including one from Haley Outon, her 20th of the season, to set Houston's single-season school record.

In the fifth, Houston loaded the bases with one out, but relief pitcher Courtney Ramos was able to induce a fly-out before Haley Outon picked up her second RBI of the day on a single through the left side to make it 7-0.

Southern Miss scratched across a run in the top half of the sixth as Caroline Walker singled and was driven in on Carissa Turang's one-out double to left field.

The Golden Eagles fell in order in the seventh as Houston completed the sweep.

Beth Dietrich (7-15) suffered the loss on 3.2 innings of work after allowing nine hits and six runs with a single strikeout and walk issued. Bailey Watts (14-8) picked up her second complete game victory of the weekend after striking out eight Golden Eagle batters.

Brittany Lilly led Southern Miss at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance including the team's first two hits.

Southern Miss will return to action on Thursday when they head to Birmingham, Ala., for the 2012 Conference USA Softball Championship. They will play either Tulsa or UAB and the game time has yet to be determined.
