Greenville, N.C. - Southern Miss (12-26, 4-13 C-USA) fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Conference USA foe East Carolina at the ECU Softball Stadium.
Beth Dietrich allowed just three hits and two runs but it was not enough as the Pirates score a pair of two-out runs to win the series opener 2-1.
The Golden Eagles got four hits, including a pair of triples, in the second game but fell 3-1 as East Carolina secured the series victory.
The Pirates (21-25, 7-10 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out double by Jasmine Robbins to drive in Priscilla Velasquez from first. The run was unearned as an earlier Golden Eagle fielding error allowed a runner on base.
Britney Dinelt tied the game up in the top of the third with one swing of the bat as she got her first home run of the season, a shot that cleared the flag poles in left field.
ECU threatened in the fourth but with one out and a runner on, Velasquez lined a shot back at pitcher Beth Dietrich who was able to corral the ball, relay it to Dinelt at first for one and back down to Caroline Walker at second for two.
After retiring eight of nine batters, Dietrich surrendered a two-out solo homer to Alex Fieldhouse down the left field line to give ECU a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning.
Following the home run, ECU pitcher Courtney Smith (6-10) retired 13 of the 14 final batters to give the Pirates the first victory of the day. She finished the day with one strikeout and did not walk a batter after allowing three hits.
Dietrich (6-11) picked up the loss on six innings of work. She scattered three hits and allowed two runs (one earned) while walking and striking out one batter.
East Carolina took advantage of three walks and a single in the bottom of the second to build a 1-0 lead but a rangy defensive play from Walker to Dinelt ended the bases loaded score with minimal damage.
The Pirates added another run in the fourth to make it 2-0. Velasquez roped a double to deep left center field, knocking off the top of the wall, and Abby Wynne came across as a pinch runner of Robbins' single through the left side.
In the fifth, Dinelt reached on a one-out triple, her first of the year, but a pair of lineouts allowed the Pirates to get out of the inning unscathed.
Southern Miss looked to get out of the sixth inning without any damage, but a high flyball to right field was misplayed allowing another ECU run to come across.
Sarah Christian (15-15) earned the victory on seven innings of work. She scattered four hits and allowed one run while striking out three. Courtney Ramos suffered the loss on six innings of work after allowing three runs (two earned) while walking six batters and striking out one.
The two teams are scheduled to complete their series tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT, but impending weather conditions in the Greenville area may force a change of plans. Stay tuned to SouthernMiss.com for more information.
