AUBURN, Ala. - Taylor Beck doubled in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but it wasn't enough as Southern Miss fell 3-1 to Southeastern Conference foe Auburn on Tuesday at Jane B. Moore Field.

The Golden Eagles began the game on a high note, getting a lead-off single from freshman Sarah Evans, who battled out of an 0-2 count, but Auburn starter Marcy Harper was able to induce a fly out, pop out and ground out to end the attack.

Auburn was able to scratch the board first in the game as Brooke Lathan's hard hit grounder to first was mishandled and the speedy Tiffany Howard, who reached earlier on an infield single, come in to score the two-out run.

In the second, the Tigers added to their lead as Baylee Stephens got a two-out double to left field and came in on a Kristyn Richards bloop single one batter later.

The Tigers pushed again in the fourth, getting singles from McKenzie Kilpatrick and Caitlin Jordan before a sacrifice one-out bunt pushed the runners over, but Southern Miss starter Beth Dietrich made a nice hustle play out of the circle to get to a high chopper and record the final out.

Emily Carosone legged out an infield single in the bottom of the fifth the drive in Richards from third to put the Tigers up 3-0.

After LaPointe's single in the third, Harper settled in and retired 10 in a row until Michelle Stringer legged out a one-out infield single in the seventh. After getting pinch run for by Kaitlin Wilson, Taylor Beck doubled to the gap in left center to bring Wilson around and make it a 3-1 ball game.

But, Harper settled back in and got her ninth strikeout of the night to end the threat.

Dietrich (1-10) pitched another brilliant game but suffered the tough luck loss, throwing all six innings, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking one. Harper (14-6) threw the complete game and gave up five hits.

Southern Miss is back on the diamond tomorrow when they travel west to take on Louisiana-Lafayette in a doubleheader set to begin at 4 p.m.
