BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB's Leigh Streetman set a new season-high for strikeouts and kept Southern Miss without a hit in a 1-0 victory on Friday at the UAB Softball Field.
It was the first time the Golden Eagles had been no-hit in a full seven inning game since East Carolina held the Black and Gold hitless on April 2, 2011 in a 6-0 win in Hattiesburg. It was also Streetman's second no-hitter of the season.
UAB lead off the second with a pair of singles from Kristen McGrath and Anna Kimbrell but, after a sacrifice bunt and ground out, senior Beth Dietrich struck out Megan McGrath on a check swing to end the threat.
The Blazers repeated the effort in the third and fourth innings and failed to capitalize in the third but did not miss on it in the fourth. After reaching on a Golden Eagle fielding error, Chandler Orr advanced on a walk and came across on Amy Dennis' two-out bloop single down the right field line to give UAB a 1-0 advantage.
In the sixth, UAB threatened again after Orr reached on a bunt single and advanced on a McGrath sacrifice, but a rangy catch in foul territory from Sarah Evans and a quick throw back to second to double up the runner got Southern Miss out of the inning.
Southern Miss entered the final frame without a hit, and Streetman kept it that way, retiring the Eagles in order with another pair of strikeouts and a foul out.
Streetman set a new season high for strikeouts in a game with 13, after striking out at least two batters from the second inning onward. Streetman moved to 8-4 on the year in the no-hit effort, also surrendering four walks.
Beth Dietrich (1-7) pitched perhaps her best game of the year but suffered the tough-luck loss after giving up just the one unearned run. She surrendered six hits in the complete game effort, struck out two batters and gave up three walks.
Due to expected rain entering the Birmingham area tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow's doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. start will begin at 10 a.m.
