Lady Techsters defeat Southern Miss 8-1 to conclude weekend series
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Louisiana Tech scored four runs each in the third and seventh innings to take an 8-1 victory over Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon.
"Hats off to LA Tech," head coach Wendy Hogue said. "That's a very good softball team. Defensively they play real well and countered everything we tried. They were always positioned well. We aren't gonna stop or quit, we will get back in the swing of things. We will come back out Tuesday after our day off Monday and continue to stay focused."
The Lady Techsters (19-10, 5-1 C-USA) singled three times and drew a walk to begin the top of the third against starting pitcher Jillian Johnson. Samantha Robles made her third relief appearance of the weekend and allowed a fielder's choice RBI to the first batter. A two-out RBI single upped the lead to 4-0.
Southern Miss (13-14, 1-5 C-USA) got its lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Samantha Reynolds roped a stand-up triple to deep center field to start things off, and Lauren Holifield shot a single back up the middle to bring her home.
The Golden Eagles did get runners on second and third in the fifth and bases loaded in the sixth, but Louisiana Tech buckled down and escaped any damage.
LA Tech gave itself plenty of insurance in the top of the seventh, getting three consecutive doubles in the midst of a four-run, five-hit frame.
Robles went 4 2/3 innings in no-decision relief, and Peyton Carter recorded the last out of the game. Robles and Reynolds each had two hits on the day.
Robles also pitched a combined 9 2/3 innings for the weekend. The Golden Eagles' weekend offensive leader was Reynolds with six hits (two each game).
Southern Miss will be back at home Wednesday for a 6 p.m. battle with South Alabama.
