HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team takes the win in extra inning fashion after Samantha Papp rocketed a walk off two-run homer over the right field wall in the bottom of the eleventh. The Golden Eagles took the win, 2-0, and move to 10-14 on the season and 1-2 in Conference USA.

“It feels really good to have put forth such effort, the whole team worked together,” said Samantha Papp. “We were talking in the circle after the game and every aspect was the best it’s been. Physically we performed well but even mentally, our dugout was up the whole game. Everybody was so into and passionate about the game, I think that was a big reason why were successful.”

This was the third time Papp has had the walk-off hit against WKU and first via homerun. In the process, she recorded her fourth multi-RBI game, second three hit game, and extended her hitting streak to three games.

The rally began when Sarah Van Schaik roped a single down the right field line to give Southern Miss a base runner with one out. Papp stepped up to the plate and on the first pitch, launched the ball over the right field wall scoring Van Schaik and herself.

Samantha Robles got the start in the circle and pitched effectively through seven and 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and only two walks. Kim Crowson came in relief in the middle of the eighth inning and finished out the game allowing no runs and had a strikeout of her own. Crowson was credited with the win.

The Golden Eagles put up seven hits on the night with four of those coming in extras. It was also the first extra-inning game since April 14, 2017, when the Golden Eagles took on UTSA in Hattiesburg.

“That’s what fight looks like, that’s what passion looks like, and that’s what it’s supposed to be,” said head coach Wendy Hogue. “From start to finish we fought. Our pitchers gave us an opportunity to win that game, kept their hitters off balance. Defense played well, and then our hitters just kept chipping away. Samantha comes up with a big one there at the end. It’s a great day to be a Golden Eagle.”

Southern Miss plays host to nationally-ranked Auburn tomorrow at the Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 2 pm and fans can purchase tickets at
