Softball Steals the Win from Nationally-Ranked Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team took the win over nationally- ranked Ole Miss, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles move to 9-10 on the season.
Seven different players tallied hits in the contest. Leading the way was Destini Brown who notched her eighth multi-hit game and her fourth in a row. The freshman is holding a .523 batting average and is the first Golden Eagle to reach 20 hits on the season with 23.
Samantha Papp and Caitlyn Aldous also marked multi-hits in the game while Chase Nelson, Sarah Van Schaik, Alyssa “Tata” Davis, and Kaley Fruge all had one.
Senior Samantha Robles got the start in the circle against the Rebels and pitched her third complete game of the year, only giving up two runs behind three strikeouts. She moves to 5-4 on the season.
Ole Miss scratched the board first after Paige McKinney ripped a triple to score Alex Schneider who had reached base on a walk but that’s all the Rebels could string together until the bottom of the sixth.
The Golden Eagles came out in the top of third ready to put some runs on the board. The team put up five runs on six hits with four of those six being two-out hits. Fruge hit the leadoff single to get the momentum going. Brown followed with a single and then Van Schaik with a single to left field brought Brown home to tie the game up. Three hits later and Southern Miss was leading Ole Miss 5-1.
The Rebels tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth but only scored one and Southern Miss was only three outs away from sealing the victory.
A diving catch from Aldous, a foul ball grab from Van Schaik and a ground out to Davis secured the win over #17 Ole Miss.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a single game matchup with Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday at 6 p.m. back at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
