Nicholls State Pulls Away to Take the Win over Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team drops a heartbreaker to Nicholls State on Wednesday evening. The Colonels pulled away in the top of the sixth inning to take the win, 11-2.
Sarah Van Schaik led the team with two hits on the night, a leadoff triple in the bottom of the second and a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the second to tie the game up, 2-2.
Kim Crowson got the start in the circle and only gave up one run with two strikeouts. Samantha Robles came in relief in the top of the fourth inning and pitched two complete innings and was eventually charged with the loss after giving up the tie-breaking run.
Jillian Johnson also saw action in the circle, coming in for Robles in the top of the sixth inning and had one complete inning of work, finishing out the game.
Nicholls State scratched the scoreboard first putting up an early run in the second and another in the fourth before Southern Miss tied in up in the bottom of the inning.
The two squads exchanged a scoreless fifth inning before the Colonels bats came alive in the sixth. Nicholls State scored nine runs on five hits with only one Southern Miss error helping them. Within the inning the Colonels knocked a 4 RBI grand slam and a two- run homer to extend the lead they already had secured earlier in the inning.
Southern Miss is looking to bounce back as they head into a weekend tournament at nationally ranked Ole Miss. The Ole Miss Classic begins on Friday, March 2 when the Golden Eagles take on Saint Louis at 3pm CT. Also, the Southern Miss vs. Ole Miss match up on Sunday, March 4, will be streamed on SEC Network + or through WatchESPN.
