Softball Takes the First Win of the Weekend over Jacksonville State
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team captured the win on Friday evening over Jacksonville State in dramatic fashion. The Golden Eagles are now 5-7 on the year, 5-3 at the Softball Complex.
With the tying run on third base in the top of the seventh, Destini Brown nabbed a high fly ball out to centerfield to get the third out and secure the win, 5-4.
Samantha Robles pitched her second complete game of the season behind nine strikeouts, tying her career high, and moves to 2-3 on the season with this win.
The Gamecocks put up two early runs before the Golden Eagles responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on two hits. Ciarra Cherry knocked her third double of the season into right field to score Chase Nelson and was followed by a 2 RBI single by Tata Davis that scored Samantha Papp and Cherry.
Southern Miss put up two more runs in the sixth to extend the lead, 5-2. Jade Lewis with her third hit on the season put a 2 RBI single down the right side and drove Cherry and Kaley Fruge home.
Jacksonville State started a rally in the top of the seventh when Emily Woodruff hit a leadoff double and scored off of a single by junior Taylor Beshears to pull within one but Robles ninth strikeout and a fly out ended the scoring threat.
The Golden Eagles play a doubleheader tomorrow versus the Gamecocks beginning at 1pm and it is Military and First Responders Appreciation Weekend so all Military and First Responders can get in for free with ID.
