Softball Takes Midweek Matchup in Run-Rule Style
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team collects a run-rule victory, 8-0, over Alabama State on Wednesday night; marking the second shutout of the season.
Freshman Karley Nichols, in the lead off position tonight, finished with two runs on two hits extending her hitting streak to three games. The Brandon native also has three multi-hit games in her freshman campaign.
Five other Golden Eagles tallied hits on the night. Samantha Papp, Sarah Van Schaik, Alyssa Davis, Rebekah DiLavore, and Ciarra Cherry all contributed to the seven hits on the board.
The Golden Eagles put up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Papp with an RBI sac fly scored Nichols for the first run of the game and Van Schaik followed up with a single to left field to score Reynolds. A caught foul ball ended the string of runs.
In the bottom of the third, Papp singled up the middle scoring Reynolds bringing the score 3-0. A single hit by DiLavore and the help of an error on the Lady Hornets, two more runs scored.
Ciarra Cherry launched a first-pitch double to centerfield scoring Caitlyn Aldous to secure the win in five innings.
Kim Crowson (3-1) got the starting nod and pitched five complete innings only giving up two hits along with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Golden Eagles continue the homestand this Friday, February 23, as they take on Jacksonville State in the first game of a three game series. Make sure to wear your gold as every Friday is Go Gold Friday.
