HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss had its three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday when they fell to Sam Houston State, 3-0, in the Sunday finale of their first home tournament.
"Today, we just got a little bit out of our rhythm and they took advantage of it," said co-head coach Jon Malgradi. "Where we had been very solid over this weekend, we were a little bit out of it today. There were a lot of positives to build on though, and a lot of new faces got playing time which will help us going forward."
With the loss, Southern Miss (5-8) finishes with a 3-1 overall record for the tournament weekend, the best mark among the participating teams. Jacksonville State took a 1-4 record home while Sam Houston State tallied a 3-2 mark in Hattiesburg.
Four Golden Eagles earned All-Tournament nods, including pitcher Kaitlin Wilson (1-0, 0.91 ERA), infielders Mackenzie Sher (.357, 12 RBI) and Morgan McKeever (.273, .545 slugging), and outfielder Danielle LaPointe (.583, seven hits).
For the game, the Bearkats held the Golden Eagles to just two hits, a weekend low for the visitors, as well as their first shutout of the weekend.
Sam Houston State (5-6) struck first, opening the game with three singles and creating a Golden Eagle error to take a 2-0 lead after one.
The Bearkats added another run in the sixth on as Cecilia Castillo got a lead-off double before coming in on Ashley Isbell's single into center field.
Southern Miss was able to scratch singles from Madison Edwards and Meaghen Nelson but was unable to bring them across in the third and fifth innings, respectively.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Wednesday when they head north to take on in-state foe Ole Miss in a two-game set scheduled to start at 4 p.m. in Oxford.
