TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Southern Mississippi softball team fell in the final game of a three-game series to Arizona, 12-0, on Sunday afternoon at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
"This was a good weekend for us to build on," co-head coach Kirsten Voak said. "We played a really great team this weekend and we were able to compete. This will help lay the foundation for our future success this season. There are a lot of positives from this weekend."
Offensively, the team was unable to get the ball to drop into play as the Arizona pitching staff combined for a no hitter. Two Golden Eagles were able to reach base as plate discipline paid off with a pair of walks for Samantha Robles and Mackenzie Sher.
In the circle, two Southern Miss pitchers combined to work 4.0 innings. Kaitlin Wilson earned the start. She tossed 2.0 innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits with three walks. Wilson gave way to Robles who worked the final 2.0 innings. The true freshman scattered three hits, allowing three runs with just one earned run. Robles walked a batter, but struck out two.
Arizona took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning. After being shutout in the first inning, the Wildcats rebounded with nine runs on eight hits in the second. The inning was highlighted for UA with a two-RBI double by Courtney Rodriguez and a three-RBI two-bagger by Mo Mercado.
The Wildcats added three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Arizona was aided by a pair of miscues by Southern Miss. Following a walk, an error gave the home team a pair of base runners. A fly ball allowed both runners to advance into scoring position. The next batter singled in the two runners. With two outs, an error extended the inning and a single scored the final run of the inning, putting Arizona in front 12-0.
In the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles once again held the Wildcats scoreless. Robles started off the inning by striking out the leadoff batter. Arielle Pollock tracked down a fly ball in deep center field for the second out of the inning. Following a single, Robles closed out the inning with her second strikeout of the game.
Southern Miss continues the season next weekend as the Golden Eagles travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for the Renegade Classic hosted by Florida State. Live stats and in-game tweets (@USMSoftball) will be available throughout the weekend.
