Southern Miss Falls to UC Davis in Final Game of Fresno Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - Southern Miss (2-5) completed the final day of the Fresno State Kick-Off Classic with a 5-2 defeat to UC Davis (3-1) at Bulldog Diamond on Sunday.

Southern Miss scratched the board first, getting a run off freshman Katie Cleary's first collegiate hit, a double to the gap in right center, to drive in Mackenzie Sher from first.

Davis rallied in the second as Krista Bava reached on a one-out single and, following a sacrifice bunt, came in on Kelly Schulze's two-out single. The Aggies added two more runs on a Golden Eagle fielding error on Cassandra Ginnis' single to left field.

Schulze added to the Davis lead in the fourth as she doubled to center field to drive in Christa Castello from second. Davis went up 5-1 in the fifth as Christina Guidry was hit with a two-out pitch and came across on Bava's double to deep center.

The Golden Eagles cut back into the lead in the top of the sixth as Morgan McKeever got a lead-off triple to the left field corner and came in on Taylor Beck's groundout to the right side one batter later.

Kimberly Wagner (1-2) suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles, allowing 11 hits and five runs (three earned) in six innings of work. Jessica Thweatt picked up the win for the Aggies on four innings of work, giving up just one hit and one run with four strikeouts.

Southern Miss completes their nine-game, seven-day road trip on Tuesday when they travel from California to Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears for a midweek doubleheader.
