Grady Moorhead joined the Southern Miss coaching staff prior to the 2012 season after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Mesa Community College where he worked under head coach Jon Malgradi.

In his first season as an assistant with the Golden Eagles, Moorhead, who oversees the catchers and coaches first base, saw his catchers improve their batting averages by more than 200 points from the previous season while the numbers of steal attempts and bases stolen were both notably down from previous years.

During the 2013 season, the catching tandem of Taylor Beck and Mackenzie Sher combined for just six errors in 239 total attempts for a collective .975 fielding percentage. Beck earned C-USA All-Tournament accolades. The Meza, Ariz. native, finished the conference tournament, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored as the Golden Eagles fell to regular season champion UAB, 3-2, in extra innings.

In their time together at Mesa Community College, Malgradi and Moorhead led the Lady Thunderbirds to a record of 102-76 including a second place finish in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference in 2011. Their squad won the program's first conference title in 2010 and also hosted the Region 1 tournament.

Moorhead primarily served as the catching coach and in his time at Mesa, all four of his catches graduated on to NCAA programs on softball scholarships. He also helped develop two All-Americans, five All-Conference team members and five All-Region honorees.

Moorhead is in charge of catchers, left-handed hitters and assists in preparing scouting reports and film analysis.

Moorhead played men's golf at Paradise Valley Community College (2002-03) and baseball at Mesa Community College (2003-04). He concluded his undergraduate career with a bachelor's degree in justice studies from Arizona State in 2009. Additionally, the Golden Eagle assistant is working on his graduate degree at the University, pursuing a master's in sports management from the school's renowned Human Performance and Recreation Department.
