Akinniyi and Richmond Earn CoSIDA All-District Honors
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women’s soccer players, Ola Akinniyi and Katie Richmond, each earned CoSIDA Division I Academic All-District 6 honors the organization announced Thursday.
As a junior, Akinniyi posts a 3.7 grade point average in Architectural Engineering. Akinniyi also led the Golden Eagles this season in goals scored (seven) as a defender. The Denton, Texas native had a breakout year after going scoreless in her first two seasons with Southern Miss. Akinniyi scored four of the last 10 goals in the 2017 season.
Richmond, a senior from Pensacola, Fla., holds a 4.0 GPA in Exercise Science and plans on attending Dental School following graduation. Richmond started 15 of the 16 games she appeared in this season at right back. Richmond also contributed to the offense with one goal and assist totaling for three points.
District 6 consists of schools from Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. This acknowledgement recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their performances both on the field and in the classroom.
Thursday’s CoSIDA award is the second award for Akinniyi after earning First Team Al-Conference honors for her dominating offensive performance.
