Soccer Hosts Pair of Texas Foes

Oct. 15, 2015

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's soccer team continues Conference USA play at home this weekend with matches against UTSA and UTEP. The Golden Eagles (3-9-3, 1-5 C-USA) kick off against UTSA on Friday at 4:00 p.m., before taking the field against UTEP on Sunday at noon for Senior Day.

Southern Miss is coming off a tough weekend in South Florida. The Golden Eagles lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to FIU on Friday after the Panthers scored a goal off a deflection. On Sunday, they again were unable to find the back of the net and fell to FAU.

Kierstin Bradley, Stephanie Garcia, Somer Jones and Aisa Ribbens still lead the Golden Eagles in goals so far this season with two apiece. Garcia also leads the team in shots (32) and shots on goal (16).

Junior goalkeeper Brittany Taylor made ten saves over the weekend against FIU and FAU, bringing her season total to 81. With 274 career saves, she is just three saves away from tying Hope Herron (1997-00) for the most saves in Southern Miss history.

Taylor has also had help from defenders Kay Kay Hypolite, Ola Akinniyi and Ashton Stennis, who, along with Taylor, are the only players on the team to start all 15 matches so far.

UTSA leads the series against Southern Miss 2-0-0, defeating the Golden Eagles last fall. This is the first time the teams face off in Hattiesburg.

The Golden Eagles are 1-7 all-time against UTEP. In the last meeting in 2013, UTEP defeated Southern Miss, 1-0, in overtime in El Paso.

Scouting the Opposition:
UTSA: The Roadrunners (1-11-1, 1-4 C-USA) are coming off a 1-0 loss against UTEP last Friday. The team's lone victory was a 1-0 win over FAU on Friday, Sept. 27.

UTEP: The Miners (9-4-2, 2-1-2 C-USA) are coming off a 1-0-1 weekend, tying Marshall 1-1 on Friday and defeating UTSA 1-0 on Sunday. All four of the team's losses this season have come by one goal.
