Soccer Returns Home for Pair of Conference Games
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After opening Conference USA play on the road, the Southern Miss soccer team returns home to continue C-USA action with a pair of games at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles open the weekend with a game against UAB on Friday, Oct. 3 (4:00 p.m.), before concluding the weekend against Middle Tennessee in a game slated for Sunday, Oct. 5 (1:00 p.m.). Admission to both events is free.

Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 5-6-0 overall record and a 0-2-0 mark in league play. The Golden Eagles are 4-1-0 at home, posting four consecutive shutouts in Hattiesburg. USM's defense has not allowed a goal at home since the 40th minute of the season opener against Nicholls - a streak of 410 consecutive minutes.
Goalkeepers Shelby Presnell and Brittany Taylor have each tallied a pair of wins at home with two shutouts apiece. The duo has allowed just two goals at home all season for a 0.40 combined goals against average. Conversely, the Golden Eagles have tallied 19 goals at home with 18 assists for 56 total points at home.
Ashley Johnson, Karen Torres and Alexia Hix each have three goals apiece at home with Johnson adding an assist for a team-best seven points at home. Torres and Hix are tied for second in points at home with Breann Hedin who leads the team with four helpers at home.
On the year, the Black and Gold have tallied 70 points in the first 11 games of the season for a 6.4 points per game average. Last season in 20 games, Southern Miss recorded a 5.8 points per game average with 116 total points. Torres and Hedin lead the team with eight total points each. Torres has a team-best four goals scored, while Hedin leads the team with four assists while adding a pair of goals.
UAB enters the weekend with a 5-5-0 overall record and a 2-0-0 clip in C-USA play. The Blazers are 3-0-0 in Birmingham this season, but are 2-5-0 away from home. UAB notched a pair of shutout victories to start conference play against UTSA (W, 5-0) and UTEP (W, 2-0). The Blazers have won their last three games - all at home - by a combined 14-0.
Middle Tennessee is 3-6-1 overall heading into the weekend. The Blue Raiders enter the weekend with a 0-2-0 record in league play falling to UTEP (L, 0-1 OT) and UTSA (L, 0-3). MT has dropped four consecutive games, failing to score a goal. Middle Tennessee is 2-3-1 at home, but just 1-3-0 on the road. The Blue Raiders will play Louisiana Tech on Friday before taking on the Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
UAB leads the all-time series against Southern Miss, 11-4-0. The Golden Eagles are 2-6-0 at home against the Blazers. The Black and Gold won the last meeting between the two teams in Hattiesburg with Southern Miss pulling out a 2-1 overtime victory in 2011. Jordan Wagner (2010-12) had the golden goal for the Golden Eagles. Over half of the games played between the two teams (8-of-15) have been one-goal games, including three overtime contest. Southern Miss is 4-4-0 against UAB in one-goal games with both victories in Hattiesburg being decided by one goal.
Southern Miss leads the all-time series with Middle Tennessee, 3-1-0. The Golden Eagles are 2-0-0 all-time in Hattiesburg. The two teams played each year from 2001 to 2003 with the Black and Gold sweeping the first three games. Middle Tennessee won the last meeting between the two teams in 2006 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The game marks the first time the two teams will meet on the pitch as conference rivals.
