Women's Soccer Lucky Number Three
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three is the Southern Miss women’s soccer team’s lucky number going into Thursday’s home game against Grambling St at 5 p.m.
The Golden Eagles have opened up their 2017 season with three wins and have scored three goals in each game. Last Sunday’s 3-1 win at Louisiana-Monroe gave the team it’s second, 3-0 start under coach Mohammed El-Zare.
Beth Coleman got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles in the 51st minute after Kierstin Bradley split the defense with her pass to put Coleman on the keeper’s right side to score her first of the season. Two minutes later, Stepahnie Garcia connected with Miah Zuazua for a give-and-go on top of the box to put Garcia behind the defense to score the second goal of the game.
Garcia finished the 2016 season as the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles with four goals.
Coleman recorded the lucky third goal of the game in the 65th minute off a beautiful build up that started in the Golden Eagles own half by Karen Torres. Torres switched the field to find Garcia who was able to beat the defenders and play a ball across the goal in front of the keeper for Coleman to tap in her second of the day.
The Golden Eagles allowed one late in the game with eight minutes to go to spoil the first shut out of the season.
The Tigers travel to Hattiesburg after a 1-0 loss to New Mexico State. The team is 1-1 this season after opening the season up with a 1-0 win against Texas A&M – Texarkana on the road. Kaylee Holt scored the lone goal of the season for the Tigers.
This is the first ever meeting between the two teams.
