Women's Soccer Continues Opening Weekend Against Stephen F. Austin
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss soccer team finishes the weekend with a 12 p.m. game against Stephen F. Austin, Sunday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles won its second straight season opener in Friday's 3-1 win against Nicholls State. Becky McMullan led the team to the first win of the season with her two goals. McMullan's first goal occurred only four minutes into the game and two minutes into the second half.
Sophomore, Monica Maldonado added one just before McMullan's second goal to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0. The Golden Eagles maintained the majority of the possession against the Colonels and outshot them 27-9 creating numerous scoring opportunities including Miah Zuazua's shot off the crossbar in the second half.
Stephen F. Austin travels to Hattiesburg after a 1-0 loss to Mississippi State in their season opener Friday. Despite being outshot 18-6, the Ladyjacks held their own in Starkville but conceived the only goal of the game in the 58th minute.
Hanna Barker led the Ladyjacks with two shots and goalkeeper Allyson Smith was forced to make eight saves.
The Ladyjacks finished their 2016 season 13-5 overall and 9-2 in conference. The team was selected to finish second in the Southland Conference preseason poll and placed four on the preseason all-conference team.
Seniors, Barker and Breanna Moore and junior, Bailey Bosley earned First Team selections and sophomore Carli Arthurs was selected to the Second Team.
Barker's lead in the Friday's game will also prove to be the biggest test against the Golden Eagles Sunday after finishing last season with 10 goals and assists and was named Midfielder of the Year and First Team accolades.
Sunday's game will be the first ever match up between the two teams under head coach Mohammed El-Zare.
