Women's Soccer's FInale Ends in 3-1 Loss At LA Tech
RUSTON, LA. - Southern Miss women’s soccer concludes the 2017 season on the road against LA Tech with a 3-1 loss.
LA Tech jumped ahead early with two goals inside 10 minutes. Two headers by Kailee Hervey put LA Tech ahead 2-0. Her first goal was set up in the fifth minute for her fourth goal of the season. Her fifth goal of the season came just two minutes later off a similar play.
The two sides went back and forth early but Ola Akinniyi scored her 7th goal of the season in the 22nd minute. After the ball was freed up inside the box, Akinniyi tapped the ball in the net to cut the lead in half.
The two sides went into halftime with LA Tech up 2-1. The Golden Eagles had multiple opportunities to equalize the game in the second half but couldn’t find the net. Despite the through ball working for the offense for Southern Miss, the end result wasn’t there.
LA Tech would add its final goal late in the second half. The Golden Eagles were called for a hand ball inside the box and LA Tech converted the penalty kick to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Golden Eagles fall to 6-9-3 on the season and 0-7-3 in conference play. Akinniyi finished her junior season leading the Golden Eagles in points (16) and goals (7). The defender’s season sparked late in the season an climbed her way up to lead to team on offense.
