Soccer Concludes Home Schedule

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team ended the 2014 home season, falling 2-0 to Conference USA newcomer Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.

For the Golden Eagles, it was the final home game for six seniors - Casey Adkins, Brooke Hendrix, Ashley Johnson, Anya Koren, Conner McKie and Missy Wentz. In addition, the game served as Blake Nettles Day. It was the annual event recognizing the life of Blake Nettles and his contributions to the Hattiesburg soccer community

Southern Miss held a slight advantage on shots, 16-to-14, while both teams notched five shots on goal. Johnson led the team with six shots, while Hendrix notched three shots and McKie added a pair. Karen Torres, Adkins, Somer Jones, Adriana Garcia and Wentz each added shots on the day. Torres, Hendrix, McKie, Garcia and Johnson all recorded shots on goal.

Defensively, Shelby Presnell took the hard-luck loss for the Golden Eagles. The true freshman surrendered a pair of goals, while recording three saves.

Western Kentucky broke the scoreless tie in the second half. WKU's Nahyo Jalajel took a free kick and sent it into the box where Iris Dunn headed the ball into the back right corner of the goal to put the Hilltoppers in front 1-0 in the 54th minute.

In the 73rd minute, the Toppers added an insurance goal. After a foul, the ball was placed about five yards outside of the box. Western Kentucky's Hannah Chua tapped the ball into play for Lauren Moats to finish with the kick over the head of the Southern Miss keeper.

The Golden Eagles attempted a comeback, firing eight shots in the final 15 minutes of the game. The Black and Gold were unable to break the plane of the goal and fell 2-0.

Southern Miss returns to action on Thursday evening as the Golden Eagles travel to San Antonio, Texas to face UTSA in the season finale. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
