Soccer Falls to Marshall
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision against Marshall on Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles were unable to recover from a quick start by the Thundering Herd.
Southern Miss returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Eagles play host to Conference USA newcomer Western Kentucky. Sunday's game against Western Kentucky will be the "Kick or Treat" game. Halloween candy for all Kick or Treaters in attendance. Fans are encouraged to wear their best Halloween costumes. Prizes will be awarded to the best costumes at the game. In addition, Sunday's game will also serve as Blake Nettles Day. It is the annual event recognizing the life of Blake Nettles and his contributions to the Hattiesburg soccer community.
Offensively, the Thundering Herd topped the Golden Eagles 19-to-13 in shots, while holding a slight 9-to-6 advantage in shots on goal. Ashley Johnson led the Black and Gold with six shots on the night. Somer Jones recorded a pair of shots, while Brooke Hendrix, Conner McKie, Anya Koren, Karen Torres and Becky McMullen each registered shots. Johnson put two shots on goal, while Hendrix, McKie, Torres and McMullen all had shots on frame.
McMullen scored the lone goal for the Golden Eagles. The true freshman netted her fourth goal the season, tying Casey Adkins and Torres for the team lead. Adriana Garcia was credited with the assist, notching her second helper of the season.
Shelby Presnell was saddled with the loss on the night. The true freshman surrendered three goals in her eighth career start. Presnell recorded six saves on the night, marking the fourth time in her short career with six or more stops in a game.
Marshall was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, netting a goal in the 26th minute. The Herd's duo of Kelly and Kristine Culicerto combined to put Marshall on the board. Kelly Culicerto passed the ball to Kristine Culicerto who fired a shot that hit the post ricocheted off the post, hitting the Southern Miss goalie and deflecting into the goal.
Kelly Culierto connected two more times during the game. In the 32nd minute, she stole the ball just outside of the box and delivered a slow roller into the right back corner of the goal. In the 56th minute, Jenna Dubs sent a corner kick into the box that the Herd forward headed into the goal.
Trailing 3-0, Southern Miss used a goal from McMullan to pull within striking distance. Garcia passed the ball to McMullan who spun around a defender. McMullan put the ball in the upper third of the goal for her team-best fourth goal of the season.
