Soccer Eagles Top Blazers in Overtime on Senior Day
Oct. 23, 2011
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Jordan Wagner received a service out to the right wing, dribbled into the six yard box and blasted a shot that keeper CJ Winship was unable to handle, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 victory in overtime on Sunday for Senior Day.
Southern Miss (4-12-3, 1-8-1 C-USA) showed an attacking mentality early on as they outshot the Blazers (6-10-1, 2-6-1 C-USA) 4-2 in the first 20 minutes.
Their persistence paid off in the 22nd minute as Tricia Tillman raced down the left side through two defenders and found a wide open Brooke Hendrix at the 18-yard box. Hendrix took a single step and blasted a shot into the lower left corner to put Southern Miss up 1-0.
UAB got their equalizer 10 minutes later when, in the 32nd minute, Sam Bradford maneuvered through the box and was able to push the ball across the frame and into the far corner.
The two teams had their opportunities in the second half, notably a pair of liners from Chelsea Cruthirds, to go ahead but the game ran scoreless through 90 minutes. In the first overtime, the Golden Eagles finally got the game breaking playing they needed with four minutes remaining.
"What a great way to end the day on Senior Day," said coach Scott Ebke. "We finally showed what can happen when we attack on the ball and make the most of our opportunities. I thought this was the best offensive game we have had all season long and it was a good conference victory."
Wagner's goal gives Southern Miss their first conference victory since the 2008 season when they also defeated UAB in overtime, 1-0, in Birmingham.
Southern Miss outshot the Blazers 20-14 and won the corner kick battle 9-2. Keeper Hannah Vanderboegh, one of four seniors honored on the day, added six saves. On the year, Vanderboegh has 98 saves which is the second best single-season total in program history. With one game remaining, Vanderboegh needs four saves to tie the record and five to break it.
The Golden Eagles will close out their regular season on Friday, Oct. 28, when they host UCF at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
