Tough luck for Golden Eagles in road match
Oct. 18, 2013
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - But for a four-minute span in the second half, the Southern Miss soccer team was the equal of host UTSA. However, a brief lapse proved enough to open the door for the Roadrunners as the Golden Eagles fell 3-0 in Conference USA play.
The loss dropped Southern Miss to 6-6-4 on the year and 0-4-2 in conference action.
The match was tied 0-0 at the break but UTSA (4-10-1, 3-2-1 Conference USA) scored two goals early in the second session.
The first goal came off the foot of Happy Orere-Amadu in the 46th minute, the second from Brianna Livecchi in the 50th minute. Courtney Bertholf scored a late-match goal to round out the offense.
The Golden Eagles were resilient throughout the match and kept up the pressure to create opportunities at a comeback but luck was not on the side of Southern Miss.
Golden Eagle freshman keeper Brittany Taylor (3-6-4) faced an aggressive Roadrunner side with skill, registering 11 saves on the night including warding off four shots in one minute of game time in the second half.
UTSA goalie Bubba Makela (4-9-1) made two saves in the match.
Southern Miss wraps its Conference USA road trip on Sunday at 1 p.m. with a match against Louisiana Tech before returning to Hattiesburg for its final home matches of the season next weekend.
