Senior Day Closes Out With a 1-1 Tie
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Charlotte scored two goals on Sunday's 1-1 tie against the Southern Miss women's soccer team.
The Golden Eagles and the 49ers shared possession early to start Sunday's game. Senior Karen Torres had the first scoring opportunity in the game in the 6th minute when her shot outside the box was tipped to the crossbar by Abby Stapleton in goal. The 49ers attempted five shots but were all wide of Kelly Brahmbhatt in goal early in the half.
Charlotte's constant pressure created four continuous corners after one another but couldn't test Brahmbhatt. Six minutes later, Brahmbhatt fouled the forward attacking inside the box and received a yellow card and the referee awarded the 49ers with a penalty kick. Martha Thomas stepped up and placed the ball to the left in the net for her 11th goal of the season.
Just 30 seconds later, Stephanie Garcia's shot took a major deflection off a Charlotte defender and was re-directed into the net to tie the game.
With four minutes remaining in the first half, the two sides headed to the locker room due to a lightning delay. The teams came back to the field 30 minutes later and headed to half time tied at 1.
The 49ers would start the pressure early in the second when Megan Green had a one-on-one situation with Brahmbhatt in goal but Brahmbhatt got just enough of the ball to allow Ola Akinniyi to run back and stop it from rolling into the net.
Both sides would continue to take shots from long distance but couldn't find the go-ahead goal. Charlotte outshot the Golden Eagles 29-15. After 90 minutes, the two sides headed into overtime, the second game in a row for the Golden Eagles. Double overtime was needed after the sides were still tied after the additional 10 minutes.
After 110 minutes the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Following the game, 10 seniors were honored for their time and dedication to the soccer program.
