Women's Soccer Drop Match Against FAU
BOCA RATON, Fla. Southern Miss women's soccer dropped its road match against FAU 4-1 on Thursday night.
The Owls took the early 1-0 advantage Thursday night when Pernille Velta scored off a header inside the box. Velta would add to the lead just five minutes later off a cross from the right side of the pitch and sent her shot to the bottom right side of the net. The Owls' speed allowed them to get in behind the defense and attack the Golden Eagles' defense.
Ola Akinniyi would cut the lead in half with 11 minutes to go in the first half when Caitlin Pierce crossed the ball into the box and Ashton Stennis headed the ball down in order for Akinniyi to push the ball past Jennifer O'Campo in goal. Akinniyi now has six goals on the season and is now the leading goal-scorer for the Golden Eagles. Akinniyi has scored three of the last four goals for Southern Miss.
The Owls extended their lead in the 62nd minute when the Golden Eagles clearance landed at the feet of Arnadottir. Arnadottir went on to score her second of the season. The Owls added its final goal 11 minutes later for their fourth of the game. Despite the score, the Golden Eagles continued to challenge O'Campo in goal attempting 11 shots and forcing her to make six saves.
The Golden Eagles fall to 6-6-1 on the season and continue to look for their first C-USA win of the season. Southern Miss returns home next Friday, Oct 13th when they host Old Dominion. Friday's game will also be in honor of Breast Cancer awareness.
