HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Rice's Holly Hargreaves received a ball in the penalty area from Lauren Hughes and put the ball in the back of the net for the lone goal of the day as Rice topped Southern Miss in Conference USA action on Friday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Owls (6-4-2, 3-0) outshot the Golden Eagles 14-6 over the course of the game, including a 9-3 shots on goal advantage, to keep constant pressure on the Eagle defense.
"I told the team after the game, I was proud with the way they continued to pressure on the attack," said coach Scott Ebke. "But, we have to find a difference maker and we challenged the team to see who is going to step up into that role for us."
Defense ruled the day for both teams as reflected by the six combined shots in the second period. Southern Miss had their chances in the second, owning the corner kick margin 5-2 in that frame.
"Set pieces are where we needed to have an advantage and we just did not threaten on them today," added Ebke.
Kristen Windecker led the Golden Eagle attack with a pair of shots while Lindsey Schwaner added eight total saves on the day.
The Golden Eagles will return to the field on Sunday when they entertain another conference foe in the Houston Cougars. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the soccer complex.
