HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagles had their best offensive showing of the year here Friday night, defeating Alcorn State 10-1 in non-conference action.
Southern Miss (6-1-2) scored four goals in the first half and six goals in the second while allowing a single goal to the Lady Braves (0-4) in the second half.
Junior Chelsea Cruthirds logged a hat trick, scoring a goal just 28 seconds into the match thanks to an assist from Brooke Hendrix and Danica Roberts.
Cruthirds added a second goal in the 11th minute with an assist from Hendrix and an unassisted goal in the 58th minute.
Roberts accounted for two goals on the night with a Missy Wentz-assisted goal in the eighth minute and a goal with an assist from Kimberly Belmont in the 67th minute. Those goals marked Roberts' 10th and 11th on the year.
It was also a match of firsts for Southern Miss.
Belmont added a goal in the 81st minute with an assist from Somer Jones, her first career goal and one of three career first goals on the night for the home team.
Breann Hedin netted her first career goal, unassisted, in the 52nd minute and Morgan Saucier an unassisted first career goal in the 83rd minute.
The Golden Eagles' other goals came from Tatum Richey on an assist from Anya Koren in the 39th minute and Koren on an assist from Richey in the 53rd minute.
Stephanie Woo-Ling accounted for Alcorn State's goal, which was scored unassisted in the 69th minute.
Southern Miss keeper Lindsey Schwaner posted a clean sheet an picked up the win to improve to 3-0 on the year. Alcorn goalie Ashley Murray (0-3) made 12 saves in the loss.
The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. with a visit to Auburn.
