HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss (3-3-1) closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 2-0 victory over Arkansas State (5-3) on Friday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Junior keeper Lindsey Schwaner held the Red Wolves at bay all afternoon, saving six attempts on goal to earn her second shutout of the year.
"Lindsey had a great game today," said coach Scott Ebke. "She made some big saves for us and really performed exceptionally well this afternoon."
Danica Roberts led the Southern Miss attack out of the gate with three shots including her goal in the 30th minute that proved to be the game winner. As ASU keeper Aja Aguirre came 20 yards out of her box to clear a ball, Roberts was in the spot to deflect the ball back for the easy tap in.
Finishing out the game, Chelsea Cruthirds maneuvered around a host of Red Wolves to score in the 74th minute on a slicing shot from 15 yards out. Senior Jordan Wagner and Kristen Windecker assisted on the quick strike, and for Wagner, it was her second assist of the day.
"I was very pleased with our effort and ball control today," Ebke added. "A victory like this really gives us a lot of confidence as we head into the conference schedule. We have some top flight opponents next weekend and this team has prepared itself for that challenge."
The Golden Eagles will return to the field next Friday when they enter conference play at UAB. The two teams battled to a thrilling double-overtime match that saw the Golden Eagles come out on top. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. in Birmingham.
