McMullan Scores Two in 3-1 Win Home Opener
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Senior, Becky McMullan scored two goals including her first goal four minutes into Friday night’s game to give the Southern Miss women’s soccer team a 3-1 win against Nicholls State.
McMullan’s fourth minute goal was set up by a Lindsey Lee throw-in from the left side of the field that placed the ball inside of the box for McMullan to half-volley into the back of the net.
The Golden Eagles kept up the offensive pressure with 13 shots in the first half forcing Roosa Hurmerinta to make four big saves.
It only took 24 seconds for the Golden Eagles to find the back of the net for the second time to start the second half. Katie Richmond’s cross set up sophomore, Monica Maldonado’s header inside the box to go ahead 2-0.
McMullan added her second goal of the game with a ripping shot 25 yards out that would be just out of reach for Hurmerinta to find the top right corner of the net. McMullan finished the day with four shots.
“It was a great start to the season and I’m ready for the rest of our season for us to really play collectively moving forward,” McMullan said.
With 11 minutes left, the Colonels spoiled the shut out with a shot from way out from Mie Elvestad.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Colonels 27-9. Maldonado, Kaitlin Fayard, Kierstin Bradley, Karen Torres and Miah Zuazua all finished the game with three shots.
Freshmen, Jennfyer Caracheom Caitlin Pierce and Zuazua all earned their first career starts for the Golden Eagles.
“Our young group had some first game jitters but we were able to control the tempo and move the ball how we wanted to,” Coach Mohammed El-Zare said.
Friday’s win was the third straight season-opener win for the Golden Eagles a they move on to Stephen F. Austin Sunday, at noon.
