Underclassmen Shine in 8-1 Soccer Exhibition Win Over Southeastern Louisiana
HATTIESBURG, Miss – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles defeated the Southeastern Lions 8-1 in the team’s first and only tune-up game of the 2017 soccer season.
“I’m really excited that we were able to get everyone some minutes,” said head coach Mohammed El-Zare. “It was our goal to get everyone a minimum of 30 minutes, and we did that. We started off the game well, kept moving the ball, kept possession, created good chances and converted on our chances. We’re blending in all the newcomers with the returners and the upperclassmen are doing an incredible job integrating everybody into the team.”
Freshman Jennyfer Caracheo was one of four newcomers to score. The Royse City, Texas, native chipped in two goals, one in the fortieth minute and the second in the fifty-eighth minute, in her debut.
“It was pretty exciting when I scored the first one,” Caracheo said. “They were a lot bigger than me, because I’m small, but my teammates, like Stephanie [Garcia], told me where to run and that helped.”
Garcia added two goals herself, including two of the first three goals, as she was guiding her teammates. Garcia and the other returners played a majority of the match’s early minutes before handing the reigns over to the freshman.
“It was smart that we started with the vets so we could give the freshman an example of what to do,” Garcia said. “The freshman came in and just did their thing. I would say we played really well.”
The Golden Eagles begin their 2017 regular season campaign at home against Nicholls State on Aug. 18 at 4 p.m.
