Women's Golf Heads North for Third Tournament

Sept. 30, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Women's Golf team heads to their third tournament of the season, the Magnolia Invitational, with an eye on establishing themselves against a tough field. The 54-hole tournament will begin Sunday and conclude Tuesday at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.

"This tournament is packed with great teams and will be an outstanding test to measure our progress," Coach Erika Brennan said. "Our fight against the golf course each week and our progression with the things we can control, that's what we are focused on."

The Golden Eagles faced four teams in the field, LSU, Ole Miss, Memphis and Augusta, last week at the Lady Paladin Invitational. Southern Miss finished ahead of Ole Miss and LSU and was within nine strokes of Augusta.

This tournament's lineup features three freshman, Julie Baker, Ping Huang and Emily Cox, junior Valentina Haupt and senior Nichada Satasuk.

Baker is coming off of a performance at the Carey Collegiate where she set a new low round record for the program, a seven-under 65, and makes her second tournament line up. Cox, who had a stellar rookie debut in South Carolina, also makes her second appearance. Huang, Satasuk and Haupt are making their third consecutive tournament of the season. Miranda Holt will be competing as an individual for the second time this season.

"The team has had a solid week of preparation and we've put in a lot of work with short game so we're excited to see how that pays off," Brennan said. "The team dynamic is outstanding. It's casual and playful while still being very competitive and driven. We love the balance that the Krewe is able to achieve. Coach Kelly and I are looking forward to seeing the group get after it while playing smart golf. We are learning from every round and, we believe, that we're getting more and more self-disciplined which excites us for our future."

The team will tee off every 10 minutes on Sunday morning at 7:30 until 8:30. Holt will begin her round at 8:20 a.m. The Golden Eagles will be paired with Augusta and Memphis during the first 18 holes.
