Two Freshman Make Debut Tomorrow for Women's Golf
Emily Cox and Valeria Pichardo will get their first starts
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Women's Golf team is in Greenville, S.C. for the 2017 Lady Paladin Invitational hosted by Furman University Oct. 22 through 24 and two freshman will make their collegiate debut.
In their first starting five selection, freshman Emily Cox and Valeria Pichardo are joined by senior Nichada Satasuk, junior Valentina Haupt and freshman Ping Huang. Junior Miranda Holt will also be competing as an individual.
"I'm really looking forward to this event." said Coach Erika Brennan. "It's another great field and an opportunity to see how we stack up against some of the best teams in the country. We've had a chance to talk through the first event and clean a few details up this week. Coach Kel and I are ready to see how the girls respond. If practice is an indicator then we feel great heading into this one."
The three day, 54-hole tournament will take place on the 6,278 yard, Par 72 Furman University Golf Course.
"I feel like we had a great week coming into the tournament," Haupt said. We knew it was going to be a tough field; therefore, we focused on the things that kept us from being at the top last week. The course is narrow with small, undulated greens but I believe we had a great practice round and the team is ready to tee it up tomorrow."
Cox, a South Carolina Native, is excited to play in her first collegiate tournament.
"It is still surreal that I am playing in my first college tournament," Cox said. "The whole experience so far has been so much fun and so wonderful. I'm so excited to kick off my college career tomorrow. I'm nervous, but it's a good nervous though!
Starting at 9:45 a.m. ET Southern Miss will tee off every nine minutes until 10:21 a.m. for the first round. Holt will tee off at 10:39 a.m. The Golden Eagles will be paired with UNC Wilmington and James Madison for the first 18.
The team will look to build on momentum from their last tournament when Southern Miss shot the second lowest round in school history and fired third lowest 54-hole total in the history of the program.
