Southern Miss sophomore women's golfer Rebecka Nilsson shot a final-round 71 to earn a ninth-place tie at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup, which was played at the Cardinal Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
The Laholm, Sweden, native posted her collegiate-best tying round of 71 to end the event with a 222 total strokes. It was her third Top 10 finish of her career at Southern Miss.
Freshman Virginia Espejo (Madrid, Spain) shot a final circuit of 82 to earn a 55th-place tie with a 236 total, while junior Heather Golden (Biloxi, Miss.) collected a 79 for a 238 and a 67th-place tie. Sophomore Samantha Holt (Pensacola, Fla.) added an 80 over her final 18 holes to place tied for 73rd with a 240, while junior Kate Burns (Leesburg, Va.) tallied an 81 for a 248 total and an 85th-place tie.
So-Hyun Park of Notre Dame won the individual title with a three-under-par 213 total, including a even-par 72 over the final 18 holes. The Fighting Irish also captured the team event with an 878 team score over the 54-hole tournament.
The Lady Eagles places 14th in the 17-team field, after compiling a 310 team score over the final circuit for a 933 total. Southern Miss bettered its finish by 61 strokes this season over last year's appearance in the season-opening tournament.
Southern Miss returns to action at the Marilyn Smith/Sunflower Classic, Oct. 1-2, at the Colbert Hills Country Club in Manhattan, Kan. The event will be co-hosted by Kansas State and Kansas.
