Golf in Second After Day 1 of Golden Eagle Jam
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team put together a solid performance in the first day of the 2016 Golden Eagle Jam at the Hattiesburg Country Club. The Golden Eagles finished Round 1 in fifth place, but rallied in the second round to move up to a tie for second at the conclusion of play of the 11-team tournament.
"Overall, I think we know we left some (strokes) out there today, especially in that first round there are some we wish we could have back," head coach Erika Brennan said. "The girls rallied in the second round. Always good to post a lower score on the second 18 on a 36-hole day. We know exactly what we want to work on. We had a really good team meeting. We will be just fine if we stay committed to the process."
Barry finished the day in first place posting scores of 304 and 302 for a combined 606 and a seven stroke advantage. First round leader St. Leo (303-310--613) dropped a few strokes to finish tied with the Golden Eagles (309-304--613). Barry's Tilda Larsson (+2) and Maria Paola Fiorio (+3) finished the day in first and second, respectively. Southern Miss' Valentina Haupt finished the day in a tie for fifth, while Kelly Erasmus (+9) concluded play in 10th. Henriette Syr (T-14th) and Emily Ross (T-17th) also notched top 20 performances.
For the Golden Eagles, Haupt led the way as the freshman carded an opening round of 78, but rallied to trim five strokes off her second round for a 73. She was followed by Erasmus who was steady with scores of 76 and 77. Syr recorded a 76 and a 78 on the day to finish third among Southern Miss golfers. Emily Ross and Devon Spriddle each lowered their scores from round 1 to round 2. Ross went from a 79 down to a 76, while Spriddle cut four strokes, going from an 83 to a 79.
Southern Miss had three players compete as individuals. Miranda Holt posted an 81 early but shaved four strokes off her total for an afternoon round of 77. Jennifer Nguyen and Mackenzie Kelly posted an 81-83 and 83-85, respectively.
The Black and Gold concluded play in the 2016 Golden Eagle Jam with a single round on Tuesday morning. The shotgun start begins at 8:00 a.m. at Hattiesburg Country Club.
