Haupt Claims 14th Career Top 25 Finish in Florida
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women’s golfer Valentina Haupt claimed her 14th career top-25 career finish after placing tied for 20th overall at the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Fla. Tuesday afternoon.
The junior collected a three-over 75 during the final round, carding three birdies on the day. Haupt’s total score of six-over 222 put her above the country’s no. 93 and 91 ranked golfers and she now owns a 284-90 win loss record on the season.
“It is no surprise to see Valentina play well,” said Interim Head Coach Eddie Brescher. “She is a true work horse with a ton of tournament experience under her belt. After being tested late in her final round, Val showed discipline that you would expect from a junior. She took the big number out of play and laid up on her final hole, then hits a wedge to gimmie distance to end her round. Not a lot of players would have the discipline to do this. We are very proud of her stepping up this week.”
Senior Nichada Satasuk finished tied for 46th overall with a nine-over 81 performance this afternoon, Julie Baker tied for 52nd after shooting a third round eight-over 80, Emily Cox climbed four spots to end tied for 64th when she carded a six-over 78 on the last 18 holes and Miranda Holt tallied a six-over 78, her best round of the tournament, on the last go around.
The Golden Eagles composed a 23-over 311 for the final round, finishing 11th overall.
“Obviously, this is not the final result we were looking for, but I have to commend our girls for fighting till the end,” Brescher said. “Our finishing stretch was the toughest holes on the course and adding 20 or more mph winds to those holes will truly test your mental game and patience. We have identified some things to work on and we will handle those areas of improvement when we get back home.”
Southern Miss will take back to the course March 10-11 in Gainesville, Fla. at the Suntrust Lady Gator Invitational.
