Women's Basketball Host William Carey in New Year's Eve Contest

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball will close out 2012 by hosting cross-town foe William Carey in part of a New Year's Eve double-header with action beginning with a 12 p.m. tip time.
All tickets, soft drinks, hot dogs and popcorn are only $1 for the day only. One ticket gains admission to both games during the day.

Southern Miss Preview
Southern Miss brings a 6-5 record into the contest following a 53-44 win over Central Arkansas on Dec. 22. Tanecka Carey paced three Lady Eagles in scoring with 15 points followed by Jamierra Faulkner 13 points and Tiarra Pollnitz chipped in 11. Jerontay Clemons grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds to go with five steals.
The trio of Carey, Faulkner and Clemons continue to pace the Lady Eagles in scoring. Carey is tops at 17.5 points per game followed by Faulkner right behind at 16.7 and Clemons at 11.1 points. Clemons also paces the team in rebounds, averaging 8.4 per game.
Southern Miss is averaging 62.5 points and 39.6 rebounds while shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from the line.
Scouting William Carey
William Carey comes into the contest with a 6-5 record following a 62-42 loss to Xavier (La.) on Dec. 14. Amber Jackson scored a team-high 12 points to lead Carey while Vechatita Bonner led the team with six rebounds.
Bonner leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 11.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while Jackson is next at 9.5 points per game.
The Crusaders are averaging 61.4 points and 34.4 rebounds per game while shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 82.8 percent from the line.
Southern Miss vs. William Carey Series
This is the 10th meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1977-78 season. The two teams faced each other for the first time on December 5, 1977 in Reed Green Coliseum with the Lady Eagles winning that matchup. William Carey won the second meeting of that same season in Clinton Gym. Southern Miss has won the last seven meetings between the two teams.
Following the William Carey game, Southern Miss opens 2013 on the road, traveling to UNO in a 12 p.m. game in the Lakefront Arena.
