Southern Miss Saddles Up for Non-Conference Road Finale
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball team saddles up for its final road trip of the 2017 non-conference schedule with battles against Samford on Dec. 19 and Georgia Tech on Dec. 21. Both games will tip off at Noon CT.
Coming off a 58-38 win over Sam Houston State, the Lady Eagles are 7-3 on the season with three games remaining until Conference USA play begins on Jan. 4.
Southern Miss last played Samford during the 2015-16 season, a 58-48 win for the Black and Gold, and has not traveled to Samford since the 2003-04 season. The Lady Eagles own a 4-1 all-time record against the Bulldogs.
Jayla King has continued to shine for the Lady Eagles after notching a double-double against the Bearkats, her fifth of the season, and has posted a double-double in three consecutive games. It’s the longest double-double streak for a Southern Miss played since Caitlin Jenkins posted three straight against William Carey, LA Tech and Charlotte during the 2015-16 campaign. King leads C-USA and is ranked 24 in the country with five double-doubles on the year.
Shonte Hailes is leading the conference with her 57 total assists, 5.7 per game, and Amber Landing is pacing the conference with total shots blocked, 23, and blocks her game, 2.3.
King has made the second most field goals made amongst conference players, 64, and is top 50 in the nation with free throws made, 45.
Comparatively, Southern Miss will face a Samford team that distributes the ball very well. The team averages 15.7 assists a game and Charity Brown dishes out seven assists a game, eighth most nationally. The Bulldogs are also a team that averages two less total fouls per game than the Lady Eagles.
