Southern Miss Set to Face South Alabama Thursday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Lady Eagles, coming off a 71-59 win over Northwestern State, welcome South Alabama into Reed Green Coliseum tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
Coach Joye Lee-McNelis’ squad battled the Jaguars last year, mounting a 12 point comeback in the second half, and left Mobile, Ala. with a 57-48 victory. King was the team’s second leading scorer with 10 points and Respect Leaphart corralled a game and career-high 11 rebounds.
King is leading the scoring attack for this year’s group, averaging 17.3 points, and has had outburst of 25 and 30 points against Northwestern State and Alcorn State, respectively. Of any Conference USA player, the Pensacola, Fla. native has gathered the second most total rebounds at a mark of 60 and has the second most total steals with 18.
Leaphart got her first career start earlier this month against Mississippi State and has started the past four contests.
Amber Landing has altered 21 total shots this season, the seventh most in the country, and has had at least 4 blocks in the last three challenges, including a career-high five blocks against Alabama State. Her averaged of three blocks per game is good enough for 13 most in the country.
This will be the 31 meeting of the Lady Eagles and Jaguars, the earliest coming during the 1975-1976 season. The two programs met twice during the inaugural season for women’s basketball at Southern Miss and the first showdown, a 56-48 win in Reed Green Coliseum, was the program’s second ever victory.
