Southern Miss Hosts Annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball team welcomes Alcorn State, Alabama State and Stephen F. Austin to Reed Green Coliseum for the annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 24-25.
The Lady Eagles will face the Lady Braves on Friday at 6 p.m. and then see the Lady Hornets at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Southern Miss faced both teams last year, beating Alabama State 70-43 in the third game of the 2016-17 campaign and defeating Alcorn State 99-56 in last season’s Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic.
“Both of those teams, Alabama State and Alcorn State, can be compared to Mississippi Valley State,” said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. “They’re very guard oriented and they’ve got some guards who can really shoot the ball. Both teams are going to get at you defensively and get a lot of buckets off rebounds. We’ve got to do a good job guarding them, which we didn’t do a good job against Mississippi Valley State. That has to happen for us to be successful.”
The Lady Eagles won last year’s Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic after beating Alcorn State in the first round and then beating Louisiana 71-49 in the championship game.
“The Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic has been going on for years and it’s just such a deep tradition here at Southern Miss,” McNelis said. “It gives the family of players from out of town a chance to come into town, be with them here for Thanksgiving and watch two games.”
Stephen F. Austin will play Alabama State on Friday at p.m. and then the Ladyjacks will face Alcorn State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
