HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team plays host to Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, Nov. 23, in a 7 p.m. tip in Reed Green Coliseum.
The Lady Eagle contest can be heard on WHXB-FM 96.5 or at www.SouthernMiss.com with Josh West, voice of the Lady Eagles, providing the play-by-play action and legendary coach Kay James as color analyst.
Free admission is granted to all fans with a Southern Miss-Middle Tennessee football ticket stub.
Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 72-60 win against UALR. Junior Tamara Jones turned in a career-high 41 points, recording the third most in a single game. She also grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds in recording a double-double. Senior Jamierra Faulkner added 13 points, nine assists and four steals. The Lady Eagles connected on a perfect 22-of-22 from the line to record.
Jones currently leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 23.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Faulkner is next at 14.3 points followed by Ashley Folsom 12.5 points and Brittanny Dinkins at 11.8 points. Faulkner is dishing out 11.7 assists per game to go with 4.5 steals.
The Lady Eagles are averaging 81.0 points and 40.0 rebounds per game while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 72.4 percent from the line.
Jones' 41 points ties the sixth most scoring in a single game in Conference USA.
Scouting Florida Gulf Coast
Florida Gulf Coast (3-0) comes into the game following a 78-73 against Charlotte. Stephanie Haas led a group of four with 19 points followed by Sarah Hansen with 17, Whitney Knight had 15 and Jenna Cobb chipped in 13. Kaneisha Atwater and Hansen pulled down seven rebounds apiece.
FGCU returns 10 letterwinners including all three starters from last season that finished 27-7.
Knight leads the team in scoring with an 18.0 per game average followed by Haas, Cobb and Hansen all with an 11.3 point per game average. Atwater leads the team in rebounding at 8.7 boards per game. As a team, FGCU is averaging 74.4 points and 39.0 rebounds per game while shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 66.0 percent from the line.
Coach Karl Smesko is in his 12th season at Florida Gulf Coast.
The Lady Eagles remain home to host their annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 29-30. The tournament includes Mississippi Valley State, Eastern Kentucky and Florida A&M. The tournament gets underway on Friday at 5 p.m. with Southern Miss and Mississippi Valley followed by Eastern Kentucky and Florida A&M at 7:30 p.m.
