Shonte Hailes Wins First Career Player of the Week Award
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women’s basketball player Shonte Hailes won her first career Conference USA Player of the Week award after a week of competition that included two home contests and an away matchup.
Hailes’ week started with a 22 point outburst in a comeback win against Tulane in the Battle for I-59. Against the Green Wave, 13 of Hailes’ total points came in the second half. She also added a game-high seven assists and three steals.
The middle week matchup, an 84-69 victory against Mississippi Valley State, saw another double-digit scoring output from the sophomore. She helped the Lady Eagles again pull away from the competition in the second half and logged 15 of her 18 final points through the third and fourth quarters. Her seven made field goals in the game tied her career-high.
The Quitman, Miss. native capped her week by logging 10 points, her fourth double-figure scoring game of the season, on five-of-eight shooting in a loss to No. 7 Mississippi State. Hailes also handed out five helpers, a game-high, and has passed out a minimum of five in the past three straight games.
The Lady Eagles finished the week with an overall record of 3-1 and will be at home twice this week for the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic.
Southern Miss plays its first game of the classic on Friday at 6 p.m. against Alcorn State.
