Lady Eagle Basketball Team Hits the Road to Face Nationally Ranked Kentucky

Southern Miss is coming off an 88-69 loss to UT-Martin on Wednesday night. Jamierra Faulkner, who missed the season-opener, led the way with 21 points followed by Tanecka Carey with 19. Redshirt freshman Nitesha Pierce came off the bench and tossed in 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ance Celmina also had eight rebounds.
The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 46.8 percent from the field including 40.0 percent from behind the arc. Carey leads the Lady Eagles in scoring at 22.0 points followed by Faulkner at 21 points and Rachel Vigers at 18.0 points per contest. Celmina leads the team in rebounds at 10.0 boards per game. As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 65.5 points and 42.0 rebounds while shooting 46.2 percent from the field.
No. 17/13 Kentucky comes into the game with a 3-0 record following an 81-47 win over Northeastern on Thursday. The Wildcats got scored 30 points in the paint and 40 off 37 Northeastern turnovers. A'dia Mathies scored a game-high 20 points followed by Keyla Snowden with 14, Azia Bishop added 12 and Bria Goss chipped in 11. UK was 10-of-28 from behind the arc and collected 19 steals. The team finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the field and 67.9 percent from the line.
Coach Matthew Mitchell is in his fifth season at Kentucky and returns 10 letterwinners including all five starters from last year's squad that finished 25-9 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Mathies leads the squad in scoring and rebounding with 18.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. Kastine Evans chips in 13.0 points per game while Snowden and Bishop average 11.3 and 10.7 points per game, respectively. Samantha Drake and Brittany Henderson are pulling down 6.7 and 6.0 rebounds per game, respectively.
As a team, UK is averaging 92.3 points and 47.0 rebounds while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 72.8 percent from the line. The Wildcats have connected on 20 triples in three games while holding their opponents to just nine three-pointers. Kentucky has collected 57 steals and forced its opponents into 38.3 turnovers per game.
Kentucky leads the series 2-0. This is the third meeting between the two teams. The Wildcats won the initial meeting with a 59-44 win in the Dartmouth Tournament in 2001. Last season Kentucky defeated Southern Miss in the finals of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic.
