Southern Miss Opens Regular Season With Cross Town Foe William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team officially tips off the 2011-12 season when the Lady Eagles host cross town foe William Carey Monday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
It is Hattiesburg Night at Reed Green Coliseum all Hattiesburg public officials will be honored.
Festivities to celebrate tip off are as follows:
12 noon- Shout out in the cafeteria to announce Pep Rally and game
3:45 p.m. - Christian Motorcycle Gang pick up Lady Eagles at Coliseum - Drive through campus to Pep Rally
4 p.m.- Pep Rally in the Freshman Quad behind Wilber Hall- Stones Throw (Old Panhellenic)
Southern Miss is coming off a 67-53 win over West Alabama in exhibition play on Nov. 7. Junior Tanecka Carey paced four Lady Eagles in scoring with 18 points followed by Jamierra Faulkner with 14, Rachel Vigers added 12 and Niesha Pierce chipped in 10 points. Vigers recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds. The Lady Eagles pulled down 50 rebounds.
William Carey comes into the game with a 1-3 record following a 73-65 win over Blue Mountain in the Belhaven Classic. Chelsea Combest and Megan Reynolds lead the team in scoring with 10.3 and 10.0 points, respectively. TeAnna Carter chips in 9.8 points with Crystal Tucker adding in 9.5 points and a team-leading 8.0 rebounds per game. As a team, Carey is averaging 62.3 points and 36.8 rebounds while shooting 39.7 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from the line.
This is the eighth meeting between the two teams as Southern Miss leads the all-time series 7-1. The last time the two teams played was Nov. 23, 2009, in Green Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles remain at home for a Wednesday matchup against UT-Martin at 7 p.m.
