Mayor Welcomes Southern Miss, William Carey to Open Basketball Season
The event will take place in the mayor’s office (200 Forrest St.) at 11 a.m. Thursday morning
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women’s basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis, along with William Carey coach Tracy English, joins Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker, this Thursday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m., to help open the 2017-2018 women’s college basketball season.
Both coaches, and Barker, will be available to answer questions regarding the upcoming season as well as the importance of basketball in the Hub City. The event will take place in the mayor’s office (200 Forrest St.).
Coach McNelis, the reigning Conference USA Coach of the Year, will be at the helm of the Southern Miss women’s basketball program for her 14th season. Coach English, a three-time conference coach of the year winner, enters his 28th season with the Crusaders. Southern Miss finished last season with a 23-11 record, 13-5 in Conference USA and a WNIT appearance.
The Lady Eagles and Crusaders open the season, Friday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m., in Reed Green Coliseum. The two teams have met 14 times since 1977, Southern Miss holds the series advantage 13-1.
The game will be Education Day at Southern Miss and hundreds of school children will get the opportunity to attend the contest. In addition, active and retired military personnel will be admitted free to the game in honor of Veterans’ Day. The Golden Eagle men’s team opens the season later in the day against Southern-New Orleans at 7 p.m. at Green Coliseum.
