HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team tips off the its 39th season the Lady Eagles host West Alabama in the season opener Friday at 11 a.m. for Education Day.
Additional activities to help kick-off the season include an "Education Day" as part of their continued community service. The Lady Eagle team has extended an invitation to area elementary schools with the purpose of offering the schools the opportunity to visit a college campus and watch a collegiate athletic event. The team has visited several area schools and shared their stories on what it takes to be a college student-athlete.
Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles (0-0) are coming off a 77-54 win over Auburn-Montgomery in an exhibition game. Senior Jamierra Faulkner led the way with a game-high 24 points to go with nine assists and seven steals while junior Tamara Jones and freshman Ashley Folsom scored 16 and 13 points, respectively. Freshman Kierra Jordan collected a team-high 11 rebounds. As a team, the Lady Eagles pocketed 21 steals in forcing the Warhawks into 33 turnovers and scored 39 points off the miscues.
Faulkner, a preseason All-Conference USA selection, is set to guide the Lady Eagles in the 2013-14 season. She led the league and team in scoring (19.0 ppg) and assists (6.6 apg) last season. Jerontay Clemons (10.4 ppg), Caron Brown (1.8 ppg) and Michelle Summersell are the only other returning players from last season. The Lady Eagles lost eight letterwinners from last season from the 15-16 team.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis, who begins her 10th season at Southern Miss and 23rd overall, will rely on nine newcomers this season. Southern Miss boasted the younger teams in the nation last year. The Lady Eagles have only seven years of Division I experience among the 13-person roster and 15 years total of collegiate playing experience.
The list of newcomers include Lashyra Cotton (Fr., Cleveland, Miss), Alex Coyne (Fr., Lake Placid, Fla.), Brittanny Dinkins (Fr., Miami, Fla.), Ashley Folsom (Fr., Deltona, Fla.), Tamara Jones (Jr., Prosser, Wash.), Kierra Jordan (Fr., Jackson, Miss.), Voche' Martin (Jr., Desoto, Texas), Markia Nix (Jr., Moss Point, Miss.) and Brooke Rhodes (Sr., Pelahatchie, Miss.). Rhodes will have to sit out the 2013-14 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules.
Scouting the West Alabama
West Alabama (0-0) comes into the game following a 73-31 loss in an exhibition game against Alabama. This will be the Tigers last exhibition game. Jada Williams led the way with nine points for the Tigers. Jasmine Hampton grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
UWA finished the 2012-13 season with a 14-15 overall record. Head Coach Craig Roden is in seventh season with the Tigers. West Alabama returns only two players from last season. Roden added 11 newcomers to the 2013-14 squad.
The Lady Eagles return to Reed Green Coliseum to host South Alabama on November 12 at 7 p.m.
