HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team is set to begin the 2013-14 season, opening with an exhibition game against the Auburn University at Montgomery, Monday, at 7 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss is coming off a 15-16 season in which the Lady Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament last season.
The Lady Eagle contest can be heard on WHXB-FM 96.5 or at www.SouthernMiss.com with Josh West, voice of the Lady Eagles, providing the play-by-play action.
Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles return only four letterwinners with two starters intact. Oddly enough, after being tabbed as one of the younger teams in the nation last season, the trend continues as the team boasts only one senior, three junior college transfers, two sophomores and five freshmen. The Lady Eagles have only seven years of Division I experience among the 13-person roster and 15 years total of collegiate playing experience.
Heading the list of returnees is preseason All-Conference USA selection Jamierra Faulkner who led the league and team in scoring (19.0 ppg) and assists (6.6 apg) last season. Also returning are sophomores Jerontay Clemons (10.4 ppg), Caron Brown (1.8 ppg) and Michelle Summersell. The Lady Eagles lost eight letterwinners from last season.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis is entering her 10th season at Southern Miss and her 23rd overall. McNelis welcomes nine newcomers to the 2013-14 squad, Lashyra Cotton, Alex Coyne, Brittanny Dinkins, Ashley Folsom, Tamara Jones, Kierra Jordan, Voche' Martin, Markia Nix and Brooke Rhodes.
A Look at Auburn-Montgomery
Auburn-Montgomery (2-0) is coming off a 70-54 win over Thomas University in Faulkner Classic on Saturday. Tina Odume and Katie Williams led the way with 26 and 20 points, respectively. Marren Schwartz and Sasha Robinson grabbed 11 rebounds apiece for the Warhawks.
AUM finished the 2012-13 season with a 21-9 overall record. Head Coach Dan Davis is in fifth season. The Warhawks return five players from last season, including SSAC All-West Division performers Katie Williams and Psachal Maize. Williams averaged 9.5 points per game last year and led the team with 63 3-pointers. Maize, a starter in 19 games last season, averaged 9.0 points per contest, but upped her scoring to 10.9 per game during conference play.
The Lady Eagles open the regular season, Nov. 8 at home, against West Alabama. The game time is set for 11 a.m. Additional activities to help kick-off the season include an "Education Day" as part of their continued community service. The Lady Eagle team has extended an invitation to area elementary schools with the purpose of offering the schools the opportunity to visit a college campus and watch a collegiate athletic event. The team has visited several area schools and shared their stories on what it takes to be a college student-athlete.
