Women’s Basketball Begins Season with Exhibition Play
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball team kicks off their 2017-18 campaign tomorrow night with an exhibition game against the University of Antelope Valley (CA) at 6 p.m.
“We’re going to be looking for several things during tomorrow’s game,” said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. “We’ll be looking at what combinations play well together, execute offensively, press and play our match-up zone better. Tomorrow is truly a test for our players to see how they handle it when the referees are on the floor and fans are in the stands, so when we tip it off against William Carey on Nov. 10 we’ll have every opportunity to know our groups that play together.”
The Lady Eagles are returning three starters from last year, Jayla King, Megan Brown and Shonte Hailes, and will be looking to have some newcomers step up and fill the roles left by graduating players.
“Our upperclassmen must take a leadership role because we have so many new players,” McNelis said. “They also have to limit their turnovers and execute on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The underclassmen are going to make mistakes, and we understand that, but their excitement will remind the upperclassmen that they were there at one point and help them remember the fun stuff.”
Antelope Valley, a NAIA school out of Lancaster, Calif., is on a 3-day southern tour and has matchups against Alabama and West Alabama too.
Entry to this exhibition game is free. Tickets for the upcoming season can be purchased online at SouthernMissTickets.com, or by calling the Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK (8425) as well as visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Center.
